Atticus's Page
Atticus is the father
of two children: Scout and Jem, and he is also a lawyer. He is all his children have.
That's why it's not
easy for him to raise them. They have no mother and no one to
be with and to learn with all day; no one that can introduce them
to the life that goes on around them.
Since they have no
mother, who can replace that loss? Atticus somehow has to replace
it. He communicates to his children by talking to them, and explaining
that life isn't always what it seems.
Sometimes people can be mean
to you, like Bob Ewell was to Jem and Scout the night when they
came back from the pageant on Halloween. Some people are not as
rich as you are and some people like the Cunnighams and the Ewell
have no education at all.He is the one Jem looks up to before
looking up at anyone .
In the trial Atticus
clearly shows that white and black people are equal. He explained
himself the best he could. He tried to show people that if Tom
had been white he would have been found innocent and because he's
a colored man he's not being respected and found guilty.
Something you have
to keep in mind is that during the trial he made people hesitate
on the fact of Tom being guilty or not. Atticus is only a character
of Harper Lee's imagination. He uses strong facts and words and
expresses himself very clearly to us. But it's actually Harper
Lee who is explaning herself through him.
