Money

The pearl didn't bring Juana and Kino money because the pearl buyers cheated them. The pearl clearly had a great value since it was big and shiny, but the buyers said it was a fake pearl, so they didn't buy it. Kino had based all the plans for his life on the value of the pearl. For example, he wanted to marry Juana. The morning they were going to sell the pearl, they already had their wedding clothes on. Kino also wanted to pay back the doctor because he had cured Coyotito when the baby was stung by the scorpion. Kino also wanted Coyotito to go to school where he would learn to read and write. Kino's dream was that Coyotito could read and that he would tell his father everything that was in books because Kino desired to know the truth of life. Therefore, Kino and his family were not satisfised because they couldn't realize their dreams and plans without money.
